Mooring at Guazhou

em discloses the writer’s homesickness on a moonlit night.

Text：

Bó Chuán Guā Zhōu

泊 船 瓜 洲

王维(宋)

Jīng kǒu guā zhōu yì shuǐ jiān， zhōng shān zhǐ gé shù chóng shān。

京 口 瓜 洲 一 水 间 ， 钟 山 只 隔 数 重 山 。

春 风 又 绿 江 南 岸， 明 月 何 时 照 我 还？

Mooring at Guazhou

Wang Anshi (Song)

Between Guazhou and Jingkou does a river flow,

And away from a few hills lies the Zhongshan Mountain.

Now the vernal breeze makes green the southern shore again,

But when will the silver moon with me homeward go?

Comment:

Opening with the description of a vast distance over waters and hills away from home, the poem discloses the writer’s homesickness on a moonlit night. He anchors his boat at Guazhou but his home is at Zhongshan, between which stand a few mountains. However, if he resolves to return home, what of it, the few mountains? Then, he shifts from space to time: spring has arrived, greening the trees, grasses and crops along the banks, but when can I go home? By asking the moon the sad question, he expresses his nostalgia and the depths of despair at failure to return home and join his family.

NANJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) — Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has called for the country to maintain confidence that it can weather challenges amid a “complicated and tough” outlook of economic development.

“As in 2008, we are now encountering difficulties which can be overcome through hard work,” Wen said during his tour to eastern Jiangsu province on Sunday and Monday.

Elaborating on the grim situation, Wen said the growth of China’s exports has been slowing and the pace of the slowdown has accelerated, especially in the past three months. Meanwhile, the profit margin of the country’s manufacturing industry has been squeezed and some enterprises have even fallen into the red.

He noted that the country is also facing shrinking external demand, rising costs and pressure from both slowing economic growth and high inflation, which makes macro-economic regulation more difficult.

Despite emerging challenges, however, the current momentum of China’s economic development is “generally good,” Wen said.

China’s economic growth has been slowing all year but remains above the global average. Its GDP growth slowed to 9.1 percent in the third quarter from 9.5 percent in the second quarter and 9.7 percent in the first quarter.

To tackle the challenges, Wen said the country will boost domestic demand while stabilizing external demand and keep its export policies such as export tax rebates “basically stable” in the coming year.

Efforts should also be made to enhance domestic enterprises’ competitiveness, promote the transfer of industry to the country’s western regions, and develop the international market, especially in emerging economies, he said.

He said China will stick to, and further improve upon, the opening-up policy and welcome foreign enterprises to invest in the country, adding that the country will protect intellectual property rights and implement a fair and open bidding approach in terms of government procurement.

Wen also demanded efforts be made to encourage private investment in sectors such as railways, public facilities, finance, energy, education and health-care.

Furthermore, he urged banks to take concrete action in better serving the real economy and asked financial institutions to enhance support for enterprises while improving management in order to control the capital bubble and prevent risks.

Wen said the southern parts of Jiangsu should engage in a comprehensive development strategy to build the province into a forefront of the country’s opening-up drive.

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) — China’s foreign trade target will be an arduous and strenuous one next year as global economic condition grows more complicated, a senior commerce official said here Tuesday.

Vice Commerce Minister Zhong Shan said at a foreign trade conference that China’s foreign trade is facing new difficulties and problems, including weakening external demand, rising trade frictions, fierce competitions, and increasing production costs for exporters.

China’s foreign trade growth has relied too much on markets in developed countries and exporters in the coastal regions, which could hamper its sustainable growth, said Zhong.

To maintain growth in exports and imports, China should target at important emerging markets with large population, rich resources and low market shares while stabilizing shares in traditional markets, he said.

Meanwhile, more efforts should be made to encourage foreign trade business in China’s less developed central and western regions and help exporters in the eastern provinces grow more competitive in the global market, Zhong added.

Growth in China’s foreign trade slowed to 17.6 percent year on year in November this year, which totalled 334.4 billion U.S. dollars, the General Administration of Customs (GAC) announced Saturday. The figure was down 4 percentage points from the October level.

HOHHOT, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) — The capital of China’s Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region used to be a multi-religious area that included Buddhism, Taoism and Islamism, an expert said Sunday.

Buddhist temples, Taoist temples and mosques had all been built in Yuan’s Shangdu, the dynasty’s capital, which proves the dynasty was tolerant to many religions, said Li Yanyang, a researcher at the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional Museum.

The religious leaders were well-treated and privileged under King Kublai Khan’s multi-religion policy, Li said.

Documents show that religious ceremonies were often held in Shangdu, especially Buddhism ceremonies, Li said.

According to Li, the multi-religion phenomenon was started after the Mongolian nobles entered middle China and began to accept Buddhism and Taoism, then Islam emerged as they went west.

Tibetan Buddhism was most favored by Khan, Li said.

BERLIN, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) — Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday called for further cooperation between China and Germany in advent of 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year while meeting with German President Christian Wulff.

Sino-German relations have been on a sound track with good momentum in recent years and continue making new progress, Yang said to Wulff during his stay in Berlin for the second round of China- Germany Foreign Ministerial Strategic Dialogue.

The leaders of China and Germany have met and kept in contacts many times this year as the first round of China-Germany inter-governmental consultation has been successful in reaching consensus on further cooperation in many fields, Yang noted.

He also pointed out that both sides have carried out consultation and coordination in dealing with international financial crisis, making important contribution to the global economic and financial stability.

Yang said that China is willing to keep closer high-level contacts, deepen economic and trade cooperation, strengthen mutual understanding and trusts, in a bid to push forward the Sino-German strategic partnership.

Looking forward to Chinese Cultural Year that will be held in Germany next year, Yang believed it will further step up the German people’s understanding about China and enhance the exchanges between the people, particularly the youth, of the two countries.

During the talks, Yang expressed the hope that Germany could play a more active role in advancing Sino-European economic and trade ties and countering against the trade protectionism, especially against the backdrop of the spreading international financial crisis.

In turn, Wulff said that China is of great significance in maintaining world peace and stability, particularly in the current fluid and complicated international situation.

It is very important for both countries to keep communications and exchanges in multiple levels, and it is imperative to bolster cooperation in light of the fact that China is an important force in safeguarding world peace and stability, Wulff said.

He also pledged support to China for holding the Chinese Cultural Year in Germany, thinking it would be conducive to the better understanding of China’s history and culture among German people. Enditem

WINDHOEK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) — An agreement on Economic and Technical Co-operation was signed here on Tuesday between the Chinese and Namibian governments.

The agreement was signed after Namibian Cabinet ministers and officials from various ministries held talks with Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong, who arrived in Namibia on Tuesday for a three-day official visit.

Minister of Presidential Affairs Albert Kawana, who is the Acting Director-General (DG) of the National Planning Commission (NPC), and Ambassador of China to Namibia Wei Ruixing signed the agreement.

The two also exchanged letters on the provision of office supplies and solar energy equipment to the Namibian government by the Chinese government.

During their talks, Liu highly spoke of the steady, healthy development of the relations between the two countries.

She said the substantial cooperation have been obtained on agriculture, mining and human resources. Great achievements have been made in exchanges of culture and education.

The state councilor also said China would like to work together with all African countries including Namibia to promote the development of people-to-people exchanges.

Namibia’s Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku proposed future cooperation with China in visual and performing arts.

He said the Directorate of Arts in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture is keen to develop future relationships that will lead to bilateral exchanges in arts education, assistance in the development of small arts businesses, the promotion of arts through the exchange of information on arts and participation in events in the respective countries.

“This can be achieved through the development of ties between the relevant institutions responsible for these areas, such as the line ministries responsible for arts, arts education colleges, performance theaters, art galleries and organizers of events such as festivals and expos,” he noted.

He also encouraged exchanges between musicians in the sphere of composition, conducting, and instrumental playing in both folklore and symphonic genres, and therefore invited China in the development of Namibia’s National Symphony Orchestra.

Hausiku also proposed for scholarships in information and communication technology (ICT), particularly policy development and regulatory framework, and linkages with Chinese ICT institutions for exchange purposes.

WUHAN, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) — A traditional-style theater was put into use Thursday in the central China city of Wuhan as part of a theme park project to commemorate late Peking Opera master Tan Xinpei.

The two-story theater, named for the artist, functions as both a teahouse and a performance venue, and can accommodate an audience of 500.

The cluster of buildings covering an area of 1,600 square meters reflects the style of the royal gardens in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The buildings are decorated with painted wood, carvings and reliefs as in traditional Chinese architecture.

“I am very happy to perform in a venue with such good conditions, and hope that Peking Opera performers from all around China can perform here to spread the traditional culture,” said opera artist Mei Baojiu, the son of renowned Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang.

The theater is part of an ongoing project that started in 2008 in Wuhan, capital city of central Hubei province, to commemorate the great Peking Opera master Tan, a native of Wuhan’s Jiangxia district.

Tan (1847-1917) was well-known for his elder bearded male roles in Peking Opera, or “Lao Sheng.” He originated the Tan genre, a unique singing style carried into modern times by his offspring.

On Thursday night, the opening of the venue was marked by a series of plays staged by the Beijing Peking Opera Troupe as part of the 6th China Peking Opera Art Festival.

A: My background and experience include working on a variety of projects and jobs in the financial industry. Most of my experience has been behind the scenes, doing the calculations. I want to work with clients and continue to grow and be challenged.
I: Why did you leave your last position?
A: I抦 not finding the work as challenging as I used to. I want to find a job that is stimulating, where I can grow.
I: What are your strengths and weaknesses?
A: One of my strengths is my ability to be flexible. I抳e seen companies go through many changes in structure and management philosophy. I抳e had to adjust my style to the new environment several times. As far as weaknesses, I really enjoy my work, and sometimes I put in too much time. But by being aware of my tendency to overwork, I have learned to pace myself more and work less overtime.
A: She抎 say I have a lot of initiative, I see the big picture and I do what has to be done. Second, I always meet deadlines. If I say I抦 going to do something, I do it. Lastly, I have the ability to focus on what I抦 working on I am not easily distracted.

Dialogue 2
I: Tell me something about yourself and your past.
I met with the technical people and discussed the possibilities and obstacles. Based on that information, I selected a team and created a spreadsheet to manage the project. We got the project done on schedule. I was rewarded for outstanding results and was able to share the honors with the team.
I: What finance experience makes you qualified for this position?
A: For the past eight years, I have been working in the banking industry. I have a solid understanding of accounting concepts, an analytical mind and a strong attention to detail. I抳e had a lot of customer service training and experience, and I have been told that I excel in this area.
